Ambassador Antoine Evrard

Welcome to the website of the Embassy of Belgium in Japan! I hope that you will find on this site the information you are looking for, both on the services provided by the Embassy and on the relations between Belgium and Japan.

The variety of the ties that unite Belgium and Japan is impressive, ranging from trade to culture, science, sports and much more. This is the result of decades of cooperation between our governments, institutions, private sector and citizens. Trade relations continue to grow, and our mutual investments are increasing as well. More than 300 Japanese companies are present in Belgium and employ tens of thousands of people there. In Japan, 80 Belgian companies are active in sectors as diverse as chemistry, biopharmaceuticals, agri-food, technology or renewable energy. Our economic relations are embedded in the Partnership Agreement that the European Union and Japan signed in 2019.

Our countries also work together to strengthen the rules-based international order, promote multilateralism, defuse regional tensions and conflicts, combat climate change and promote the Sustainable Development Goals.

In terms of people-to-people exchanges, the academic, cultural and tourism contacts are increasing. Many Belgian and Japanese universities exchange students and professors every year, covering all academic fields. Our country also promotes its culture in Japan, for instance with the Jean-Michel Folon exhibition that the Japanese public can discover until autumn 2025.

The 2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo will be a major event in our bilateral cooperation. The Belgian Pavilion will be built in the “Saving Lives” zone and will showcase our know-how and innovation in the life sciences sector.

In 2026, we will celebrate the 160th anniversary of our bilateral diplomatic relations. Such moments are key to underline the friendship between our two countries, take stock and develop future projects of collaboration.

The Embassy remains at your service for your questions and projects.

Kind regards,

Antoine Evrard
