Welcome message from Ambassador Gunther Sleeuwagen

Gunther Sleeuwagen

Dear Fellow Belgians, Dear Friends of Belgium and Japan,

Belgium and Japan enjoy excellent relations, rooted in a long history of rich exchanges and based on the solid foundation of mutual trust and respect, as well as shared values. In 2016, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of friendship between Japan and Belgium, crowned by the state visit of King Filip and Queen Mathilde to Japan. It was an opportunity to take stock of the diversity of our relations, but also to look ahead and to strengthen our future relations further and with renewed vigour.

The Embassy is trying to be an interface between the many actors that shape the relationship between Belgium and Japan. We are looking forward to working with our Japanese and Belgian partners to promote new ideas and projects for artistic, academic, business and social events across Japan. Our goal is to create an environment where reciprocal trade and investments, cultural and academic exchanges and people-to-people contacts can flourish.

We are already enthusiastically preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will undoubtedly offer another outstanding opportunity to further strengthen our bilateral relations and bring our people closer together. 100 years ago, Antwerp hosted the 1920 Olympics where Japan won its first Olympic medals, a memory to share.

In the meantime, as an Embassy, we remain committed to offering the best service to the Belgian citizens in Japan, whether they are residing in Japan or visiting Japan for business, tourist, academic or cultural purposes.

We are very pleased with the success of the direct non-stop flight between Tokyo and Brussels which is stimulating new reciprocal contacts and visits on a daily basis.

And this year, our Embassy celebrates its 90 years of presence in the beautiful area of Kojimachi in the center of Tokyo, an anniversary we will celebrate with the local communities.

Your opinion and your projects are of interest to us. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with our Embassy staff or myself in order to keep us informed about your ideas and plans. Also check out our social media and stay in touch!

I am looking forward to meeting you soon,

Gunther Sleeuwagen
