Internship opportunities

The Embassy of Belgium in Tokyo offers a limited number of internship opportunities for young university graduates. Interns rotate in the Embassy team and get a unique opportunity to gain experience in a diplomatic environment.

Internship period

The internship lasts approximately three months. The period of the internship is agreed with the prospective intern but usually corresponds to one of the following periods:

  • January-March (application deadline: 30 September of the previous year)
  • April-June (application submission deadline: 31 December of the previous year)
  • October-December (application submission deadline: 30 June)

The Embassy can host only one trainee at a time.

Selection criteria

To be considered for an internship, prospective interns must meet the following criteria:

  • the internship must formally take place as part of a Master's level or higher study programme
  • a broad interest in international relations
  • very good language skills (French and/or Dutch, English; knowledge of both national languages or Japanese is an advantage)  
  • experience with Japan is an advantage

Duties of trainees

The trainees assist the diplomats in their work. To the extent possible, they are given a specific task within the Embassy, to be completed during the internship period. Their work may include tasks such as:

  • attending EU coordination meetings, press conferences, briefings, etc.
  • reporting, looking up background information
  • supporting diplomats in preparing dossiers
  • helping to organise meetings, events, seminars, etc. 

Practical information

Internships at the Embassy of Belgium in Tokyo are unpaid; there are no allowances for insurance, travel and accommodation expenses. Candidates should take this into due consideration. Candidates must have health insurance that also covers repatriation to your country of residence in case of emergency. They must also meet the requirements of Japanese legislation regarding right of residence. The conditions of the internship are set out in an internship agreement (model available in French and in Dutch).
