Use of a Kids-ID

  • an identification document of the same form-factor as an eID, but for children under 12 years old.
  • continuing validity after moving to another country or Belgium.
  • mention of the name of the parents.
  • Cascade system  Dutch: www.halloouders.be French: www.alloparents.be

Where and how to apply for a Kids-ID?

Important: As long as the child is not yet 12 years old, the Kids-ID is only issued to the parent who lives at the same address as the child. On the other hand, an eID (from the age of 12) is only issued to the holder, even if he/she is still a minor.

It takes around 6 weeks to issue a Kids-ID.

Option 1: Application at the Embassy (in person)

If the child is 6 years old or older, the child must come to the appointment.

If the child is under 6 years old, the child does not need to come to the appointment.

  1. Make an e-Appointment ("eID -12y, application")
  2. Prepare the necessary documents, the consular fee in exact change, and a self-addressed LetterPack Plus (optional)
  3. Come to the Embassy on the date of your appointment with your child to submit your application file and to have the child's biometric data taken
  4. Receive the new Kids-ID per registered mail (LetterPack Plus) or pick it up after making an e-Appointment ("eID -12y, collect + activation")
  5. (Optional) Have the new Kids-ID activated (see below)

Option 2: Application at the Embassy (per post)

This option is only available for children under 6 years old OR children who have had their biometric data preregistered.

For children under 6 (no biometric data required):

  1. Send the necessary documents, the consular fee in exact change, and a self-addressed LetterPack Plus (optional) to the Embassy per post
  2. Receive the new Kids-ID per registered mail (LetterPack Plus) or pick it up after making an e-Appointment ("eID -12y, collect + activation")
  3. (Optional) Have the new Kids-ID activated (see below)

For children 6 years old or older who have preregistered their biometric data

  1. Have your child's biometric data preregistered within 12 months before your intended application
  2. When you are ready to apply, send the necessary documents, the consular fee, the confirmation form, and a self-addressed LetterPackPlus (optional) to the Embassy per post
  3. Receive the new Kids-ID per registered mail (LetterPack Plus) or pick it up after making an e-Appointment ("eID -12y, collect + activation")
  4. (Optional) Have the new Kids-ID activated (see below)

Option 3: Application in Belgium

A request for Kids-ID from a Belgian municipality is possible, but only on condition that both parents are present - only in this way can we assume that the legislation concerning parental authority of the country where the Belgian child lives is respected.

You can apply for the Kids-ID at

  1.  the Belgian municipality of the child's last registration in Belgium, or
  2. if the child was born in Belgium, but has never lived in Belgium: the Belgian municipality of birth, or
  3. if the child was not born in belgium and has never lived in Belgium: a Belgian municipality of your choice.

This option is more expensive. Please confirm the price with the municipality where you wish to introduce the application

The Kids-ID and PUK code will then be delivered to the municipality within 2 working days at the latest and you can activate the card immediately to the municipality.

Activation of a Kids-ID

Any Belgian citizen registered in the population registers of an Embassy or a Belgian career consulate and having a Belgian child registered in the consular registers can also activate the Kids-ID of his child at a consular post or a municipality in Belgium.

In the case of Kids-ID, the card can be activated by the parents (or the legal representative) without the child or children being present.

Certificate activations for Kids-ID are no longer accepted for children under 12 years old. On the other hand, once the minor has reached the age of 12, the certificates can be activated on his Kids-ID, but only in the presence of the minor, who must enter the card into the card reader themselves and then enter the PUK code.

Validity period of a Kids-ID

A Kids-ID is valid for 3 years, even if you move (to another post or to Belgium).

It is no longer valid:

  • if it is reported lost or stolen.
  • if the photo no longer looks like the child.

"Hello Parents" function

Kids-ID has a telephone number (+32 78 150 350), accessible 24/7.

If the child is lost and has their Kids ID, anyone who finds them can easily contact their parents or trusted people through a parent-activated cascading call system.

To activate this cascade system or for more information go to www.halloouders.be (in Dutch) or www.alloparents.be (in French).
