Life certificate for Belgians and non-Belgians

Information on the life certificate.

Belgian pensioners


Belgian citizens who are entitled to a Belgian pension and receive a document "Certificat de vie/Levenscertificaat" from the Belgian Federal Pension Office or any other Belgian Pension office, should submit in person, by e-Appointment, the life certificate, duly signed and filled-in, and passport to the Embassy of Belgium, where the necessary signature of the consular agent and Embassy stamp will be placed.

Attention: if the document needs to be signed by more than one person, then it is necessary to have both persons present at the Embassy with their passport.

If it is not possible to come to the Embassy in person because of distance, health reasons, then it is possible to send us the following by post 

  • a copy of your passport (page picture & name),
  • an envelope with return address and stamp, and  the life certificate
  • a picture of you, holding a newspaper where the date is clearly stated.

Attention, if the document needs to be signed by more than one person, then it is necessary to send a copy of the passport of each person and a picture where both are present

The originals will be sent back to you, after which these should be returned to the pension office.
 

Non-Belgian pensioners


Non-Belgian citizens who are entitled to a Belgian pension and received a form ‘Certificat de vie’ of the Belgian Federal Pension Office or other an Belgian Pension Office, are requested to follow the following steps:

Do not sign or date the life certificate in advance. This should be done in front of the notary public.

  1. Present yourself at the Notary Public Office with your identification and ask for a ‘Certificate of acknowledgement of Notary’;
  2. The Notary Public Office will check your identity and attach a ‘Certificate of acknowledgement of Notary’, signed and sealed by the Notary Public;
  3. Ask your Notary Public Office if they provide for the necessary administrative formalities for legalization (one step legalization) by Apostille;
  4. If the Notary Public does not provide for the formalities of legalization, please proceed as follows:
    • Legalize your signature at the Notary Public;
    • Go to your local Legal Office for the legalization of the signature of the Notary Public;
    • Contact The Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an Apostille at one of the following addresses:

  5. If you cannot go to the Notary Public in person for health reasons, contact the Notary directly and consult with them for a solution
  6. Mail the documents prepared in the above procedure to the Belgian Pensions Office.
